News and Weather

It is minus thirty something. There used to be a TV show called “Thirty Something.” I didn’t watch it. I’m not so fond of the weather being what it is but it is to be expected. I do live in a frozen wasteland. My sweetie isn’t so fond of it either. In her wisdom, she bought an electric blanket. I like it because it can be turned on before we get into bed.

Memory

When I was small, I had a theory of memory. My theory was this. Memory is perfect. It fit well with some of my other theories. I thought that I was perfect and I had a memory. Other people shared some of my properties though not all of them. They weren’t perfect but they did have memory. I automatically applied Occam’s razor and presumed there was just one kind of memory: perfect memory just like mine. Also, I had something that at the time I counted as supporting evidence. I remembered many things as they happened and I didn’t remember a single thing that I knew had not happened. The fact that I used my memory to check my memory didn’t bother me at all.

When the moon hits your eye…

…like a big pizza pie that’s amore.

That makes no sense at all. How can the moon hit your eye? The light from the moon can hit your eye. But, light doesn’t hit one’s eyes anything like how a big pizza pie would hit one’s eyes. The next part makes even less sense. It isn’t English. Of course, things that aren’t English can make sense. But, switching languages is generally confusing.

Why Worry?

The current state of the art for information technology is impressive. The speed and capacity of computers has been improving rapidly for a long time. There probably is some sort of physical limit which won’t be surpassed but we don’t seem to be close yet. Along with the improvements in hardware, there have been improvements in software. These aren’t as easily quantifiable but the fact that great strides have been made is obvious. Taken together, these two things have made gathering vast quantities of data about people and using that vast quantity possible in ways that weren’t easily imaginable a century ago. Three Times as Long

Exactly. Everything takes exactly three times as long when I haven’t had my coffee.OK. I don’t mean everything. If absolutely everything took exactly three times as long as when I’ve had my coffee, the effect of my coffee wouldn’t be observable. I don’t mean exactly either. I really mean I’m a bit slow before my coffee has seeped into my brain. So, if I were to say have a look at this picture before finishing my coffee, instead of immediately recognizing it for what it is, I’d stare blankly for a moment, focus on the feet, think they’re poking out of the screen, startle at the fact that there are feet poking out of the screen, remember how perspective works, realize that the feet aren’t poking out of the screen, relax and grin in slow motion over a period of three minutes instead of in the blink of an eye.

Aging Complaints

As a youth, I adopted the rule “never trust anyone over thirty.” Sure, the rule is silly. I adopted it because of that. Any rule involving the word “thirty” is bound to have something a bit wrong with it. Of course, as time marched on, I turned thirty. Since I happen to be included in the class of people that one can refer to using the term ‘anyone’ and since the rule was my rule rather than another being’s rule, I felt like following my rule. So, I did. I stopped trusting myself.

Size Complaints

I’m small. My children are small. When my children were very young, some of the times they went to the doctor, the doctor was concerned about their smallness. One time, the doctor stated that my child was in the bottom fifth percentile for weight. Oh your(1) god! One in twenty kids is in the bottom fifth percentile. What are the odd that my kids would be there? Hmm. I think I just answered that. Read the rest of this entry »

New Phone and Internet

In her wisdom, my sweetie decided that we should switch phone and internet companies. Getting these things from the new company is supposed to cost us about $25 a month less. I have no idea whether the quality of service will go down nor do I know whether it really will cost us less.

The Quest for the Unicursal Hexagram

As a youngster, I used to like drawing shapes. My favourites were five, seven, and nine pointed stars. I rather liked the fact that there are two distinct ways that one can draw a seven pointed star. Read the rest of this entry »
